Positive Attitudes

Most members of the language teaching profession realize that their students’ learning potential increases when attitudes are positive and motivation runs high. It has been noted that individual difference variables, such as attitude and motivation, are important in learning a second language (L2). Lewis (1981, p. 262) indicated “…in the long run no policy will succeed which does not do one of the three things [….} conform to the expressed attitudes of those involved.”


Teachers are of paramount importance in determining students’ attitudes towards their classes and what they do in class may influence students’ learning for along time.  A caring teacher is the most important aspect of improving the positive attitudes of the students. The EFL teacher more than any other subject instructor must be approachable and understanding. Students must feel the teacher is genuine and supportive, and the students' values and opinions will be respected. The fact is that it is not possible to make teaching effective if the attitude is wrong. So teachers need to have positive attitude towards students, if a positive classroom atmosphere is to be maintained.                                                                                                      

Teachers must be kind and listen fairly to the students, and be patient when they don't understand. Throughout my career, I have seen teachers who run their classes very strictly, almost as a sort of dictator' in class. The teacher gets upset at the students who don't try, when it appears the reason is that they don't understand what is asked of them.
